English Layer Cake

Recipe:

Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Assorted food coloring (optional)
- Buttercream frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons milk
- Assorted food coloring (optional)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

3. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the flour mixture.

6. Stir in the vanilla extract.

7. If desired, divide the batter evenly into separate bowls and add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl to create different-colored cake layers.

8. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pans, spreading it evenly.

9. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

10. Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer the cakes to a wire rack to cool completely.

11. While the cakes cool, prepare the buttercream frosting. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.

12. Gradually add the powdered sugar, beating well after each addition.

13. Stir in the vanilla extract.

14. Add milk as needed to achieve a smooth and spreadable consistency.

15. If desired, divide the frosting into separate bowls and add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl to create different-colored frosting.

16. Once the cakes have cooled, place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of buttercream frosting on top.

17. Repeat with the remaining cake layers, spreading buttercream frosting between each layer.

18. Decorate the top and sides of the cake with the remaining buttercream frosting as desired.

19. Serve the English Layer Cake and enjoy!
